Eric Johnson Jr. Set to Make US Legend Car Debut at Las Vegas Bullring
Eric Jr is taking his learning mentality to a whole new level with his "boots on the ground" approach next week. With a brief break in the ARCA Menards Series West schedule, Eric Johnson Jr. is seizing the opportunity to sharpen his racing skills in a brand-new setting. The 22-year-old driver announced this week that he will compete in a US Legend Car at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on July 2nd and 3rd, marking his first-ever start in the series and first laps at the iconic short track.
“This is going to be a completely new experience for me,” Johnson Jr. said. “I’ve never raced a Legend Car and I’ve never turned a lap at the Bullring, so I’m really looking forward to the challenge. I’ve watched these cars race all over the country and always thought it looked like a blast. Now I finally get the chance to climb behind the wheel of one. I couldn’t be more excited.”
The move comes as part of an effort to gain additional seat time outside of his full-time ARCA West schedule. Johnson Jr., who began his career in Baby Grand Stock Cars, sees this as a return to his racing roots but with a modern twist. The US Legend Cars are known for their nationwide presence as they've been the foundation of countless racing careers.
The US Legend Cars class is a spec racing series, meaning the cars are all produced by a single sourced manufacturer (INEX). The purpose of the class is to give drivers of all ages a fair, safe, and budget friendly learning opportunity while further advancing their on track skillsets. The cars are roughly 1,500 lbs single seater vehicles powered by a 3 cylinder 900cc motorcycle engine. With a short wheelbase and high power-to-weight ratio, the cars are known for their on edge racing product. This helps drivers of all ages improve their car control at tracks across the nation.
“Legend Cars are known for being tough to drive, and that’s exactly what makes them such a valuable tool for learning, for all ages” he explained. “So many top drivers have spent time in this series, and there’s a reason for that. This is a great opportunity for me to grow and keep developing as a driver.”
Johnson’s ARCA Crew Chief, Dustin Ash, a veteran of Las Vegas short track racing and the winningest driver at The Bullring, will be on hand to guide the effort, helping coordinate the race along with support from a dedicated group of sponsors. “I can’t thank my team and partners enough for making this happen,” said Johnson Jr. “Dustin’s knowledge of the Bullring will be huge, and having his support outside the ARCA garage is something I’m extremely grateful for. it really goes to show how much effort Dustin puts into the drivers he works with. He's not just a Crew Chief. He's a mentor for me.”
Special thanks to Eric's partners making this weekend possible: Pacific Office Automation, Sherwin-Williams, Paul Davis Restoration, Valleyscapes, Key Property Services, Product 41, and Kindness 911.
With back-to-back nights of racing ahead, Johnson Jr. is eager to get behind the wheel of the No. 5 Legend Car and embrace the challenge. “We're rolling the dice in Las Vegas!” he said with a grin. “It’s all about learning, gaining experience, and getting better every time I strap in. Let’s have some fun and see what we can do!”
